Do's and Do Not's of Mask Use

For basic mask information see Everything About Masks to Prevent Infectious Diseases.

  • Do place mask on face correctly. If the mask is not fit properly, it will not protect a person from infectious diseases. A properly fitted mask is sealed around the mouth and face prohibiting the entrance of air via any other means besides through the mask itself.
  • Do disinfect reusable masks with replaceable filters between users. The filter must be replaced before next user.
  • Do have your mask refitted if you: lose or gain weight, have scarring or surgery that may change the shape of your face. Tight fitting masks that have a replaceable filter need to be fitted to each user
  • Do shave very well. Masks do not offer protection to people who have facial hair. Even stubble can affect the seal of the mask and therefore its ability to protect you.
  • Do follow the manufacturers instructions regarding use.
  • Do not reuse disposable masks. Viral particles, for example, can survive for many hours and sometimes days.
  • Do not touch the outside of the mask. If you do touch the mask, wash your hands right away.
  • Do not touch your face, mouth or nose.
  • Do not share disposable masks.
  • Do not use the respirator for situations it was not designed.

Make Your Mask Fit

A mask that does not fit properly cannot protect you. OSHA has regulations on fitting masks. Read OSHA’s fit testing procedures made easier to read here by the Minnesota Department of Public Health.

The Fit Test

You can buy a fit testing solution that allows you to ensure the mask is properly fitted to your face. The solution sold below is saccharin and is sprayed into the atmosphere in a controlled situation, for example, under a hood. If the mask user can detect “sweet” then the fit test has failed and you must refit the mask or try another mask model. Here is a list of N95 NIOSH certified, FDA Approved Masks and a place to Buy Bird Flu Masks Online.
